The Heat Death of the Internal Universe

Otherwise, Catastrophe

Abstract

"Heat Death of the Internal Universe” explores the science fiction narrative "Heat Death of the Universe" by Pamela Zoline, its relation to entropy, and Martin Heidegger's concept of World Collapse. Zoline's narrative follows Sarah Boyle, a 1960s housewife and mother, as she struggles to maintain a happy family, order, and control over her life. The collapse of her internal world is reminiscent of entropy, but it can help us understand one's struggle through an existential crisis and the resoluteness to break free from the “Every Man,” or the superficial societal norms and expectations that make us fall into collapse in the first place.
