"Upheavals in Online Spaces: Fan Experiences of Destiny 2's End of Development"
Play, Horror, Dread
Abstract
In keeping with the conference's themes of upheavals and ruptures, this presentation will cover thematic content analysis examining the fan reaction to the recently announced end of the live-service video game Destiny 2's active development on r/destiny2. This will take a perspective informed by various affect theorist scholars, particularly Tomkins and Ahmed. This analysis will provide an insight into how digital cultures deal with an upcoming and inevitable loss of activity, rather than a retrospective examination. Thus, Destiny 2’s end of active development provides a valuable and time-limited opportunity for examining how accompanying emotions are processed, communicated, and acted out.
