Disrupting the Continuum: Art, Pedagogy, and the Politics of Non-Racism
Disrupting the Continuum Workshop
Abstract
In these post-racial times in which racist expressions operate in systems and the personal––almost invisible and impossible to challenge––scholars argue there has been an oppressive flattening of diversity that serves the dominant status quo. We use art and pedagogy to bring non-racism invisibilities to light and transform them into anti-racism visibilities. Through a framework that fuses academic ethnographic inquiry with Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed (TOTO), workshop participants will be (1) invited to interrogate the non-racism-anti-racism continuum that exists beneath the veneer of neutrality and (2) introduced to practical anti-oppression tools that recognize and challenge non-racism in systems and the everyday.
