AI Intimacies and Academic Integrity: Crisis and Cheating in the Glitch
Basket Weaving And Other Vicissitudes
Abstract
This paper takes up the contentious subject of generative AI and student cheating in higher education, situating these debates within the conditions of teaching and learning inside the university that the “crisis” of AI has intensified and made newly visible. The narrative has three parts. The first, teaching and learning and the inconvenience of others, considers education as friction and AI as refusal. The second turns to the “crisis” of GenAI and cheating as “glitch” (Berlant). Finally, I ask how we might imagine a more collectively equitable university--one capable of responding to GenAI as a historical and political problem as opposed to a technical disruption.
