The Living Archive: Ekşi Sözlük and the Gezici Master Frame

Demos

Abstract

Following the 2025 judicial removal of Istanbul's municipal leadership, Turkey witnessed massive protests characterized by the revival of the 2013 Gezi movement's symbolic repertoire. The recycling of Gezi-era terminology in chants, hashtags, and digital spaces—notably on the Turkish participatory dictionary platform Ekşi Sözlük—demonstrates a highly persistent collective framework. This paper argues that this enduring relevance is embedded in Gezi's origins, allowing it to serve as a master frame in Snow and Benford's terms: a broad, overarching interpretive framework that provides the shared grammar and symbolic resources necessary to structure and unite successive relevant protests in Turkey.
