(Il)legible: conspiracy theory and the internet

Publics

Abstract

The internet is a place of overwhelming amounts of information moving at speeds that are impossible to track for even the most ‘chronically online’ person. This forms a sense of illegibility, especially in the aftermath of violent events where misinformation quickly becomes ingrained narratives which in turn form conspiracy theories that are hard to break out of. Pulling from a number of disciplines, I attempt to find a definition of il/legibility that addresses and contains its political potential. Is the opposite of illegibility legibility, or something completely different? How can we render the illegible legible.
