Platforming #Ozoemena: Memory and Affective Resistance on X
Demos
Abstract
Drawing on Pappacharissi’s (2015) affective public and the digital ethnographic methodology, I investigate the narratives of the Nigeria- Biafra Civil War (1967-1970) on X and argue that the hashtag #Ozoemena (May it not happen again) is a form of affective digital activism and mnemonic resistance through which people remember the conflict while connecting historical trauma to contemporary political realities. Overall, the results suggest that #Ozoemena operates simultaneously as a digital shrine, mnemonic archive, affective public, and political intervention. Furthermore, the hashtag sustains collective memory while shaping and mediating discussions on citizenship, belonging, and socio-economic and political challenges in contemporary Nigeria.
