Digital Graveyards & Death Selfies: Relics of the 2026 Iranian Massacre

Demos

Abstract

Social media platforms serve as sites of witnessing and testimony of political violence during the ongoing 2026 Iranian massacre. The Islamic Regime’s (IR) ongoing record-breaking internet blackout and massacre of over 30,000 civilians turned such platforms into a “digital graveyard,” immortalizing victims’ stories. This study investigates the cultural significance of footage cataloguing human rights violations under dictatorships. Iranians’ participation in the “death selfie” has become a practice of “self-life-inscription,” community-building, journalistic testimony, and remembrance. Thus, death selfies become artifacts that resist historical erasure and sustain collective memory through digital memorials, affectively embodying testimonies of Iranians’ experiences under political subjugation.
