Labour Migration, Agency, and the Politics of Content Creation

Making Culture

Abstract

Within contemporary migration contexts, digital and communication technologies have emerged as significant forces that shape how migration is experienced. This paper examines how content creation, such as the production of Facebook Reels, offers possibilities for reclaiming agency, facilitating transnational networks and communities, and disrupting dominant narratives that render domestic work "invisible." This research aims to explore the following questions: How do migrant care workers use social media to make visible and reframe domestic labour, and in what ways does this visibility enable forms of agency, self-representation, and transnational connection? What new meanings of labour emerge through these mediated representations?
