Indigeneity, Diaspora, and Settler Colonialism: Global Connections

Indigeneity, Diaspora, Settler Colonialism Working Group Panel

Abstract

This working group will engage questions on Indigeneity, Diaspora, and Settler Colonialism and consider their political urgency, from comparative global perspectives, in the context of a culture of contestation and ongoing Canadian settler state violence that is materially and ideologically connected to Western projects of global imperialism. As Megan Scribe of the Yellowhead Institute notes, “settler moves to Indigeneity” are core to material genocide whereby ethnonationalism and white supremacy combine to uproot Indigenous people from their lands and cultures. We will aim to situate the effects of settler colonialism in comparative perspectives to illuminate shared structures including Residential Schools, deforestation, climate emergency and cultural erosion to ensure that connections are made.
