Classroom, collegium, and community: Studying the talk of teacher education

Teaching Upheaval

Abstract

Drawing on Tyson Lewis’s (2013) engagement with Agamben on study and educational impotentiality, I turn to the talk of teacher education in three sites: the classroom, collegial work, and public education discourse in Saskatchewan. I consider what registers as upheaval, and for whom, in conversation about what goes on in education, schools, and teacher education and in how the classroom, “collegium” and community talk about each other. I find in Lewis’s work on study as a profane practice of freedom, a way to conceive of, and possibly to exist and teach in, these talking spaces with actual accountability, ethics, and care.
